OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing sponsored product and service suggestions to the platform’s free and Go-tier users.
The rollout makes India one of the latest markets to experience ChatGPT’s advertising model, with more than 50 brands expected to participate during the launch week.
But the bigger story isn’t simply that ChatGPT now has ads. It’s where those ads appear: inside conversations where users are actively researching, comparing, and making decisions. For marketers, this could signal a shift from traditional audience targeting toward context and intent-based advertising.
Who Will See ChatGPT Ads in India?
Initially, both free users and those who pay ₹399 a month will first be able to see advertisements.
One of ChatGPT’s largest and most active markets is India. 38 additional nations currently have access to the feature. Furthermore, advertisements won’t be shown next to delicate or prohibited subjects like politics and mental health. Additionally, OpenAI stated that accounts with users identified as minors or those under the age of 18 will not see advertisements.
This week, ChatGPT users in India will encounter ads from more than 50 brands, thanks to a collaboration between OpenAI and advertising firms WPP and Omnicom.
OpenAI will continue to work with other organizations in the future; the agreement is not exclusive.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?
If OpenAI finds a related sponsored product or service, advertisements might appear beneath a ChatGPT response.
OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT’s responses will remain unaffected by advertisements and will continue to be refined for the benefit of users. This separation is a crucial element of OpenAI’s advertising model.
ChatGPT Ads and User Privacy: What Data Is Shared?
OpenAI has set forth specific principles to inform how it presents ads in ChatGPT.
The company has stated that it will neither sell nor provide advertising access to user information or ChatGPT conversations. In contrast to targeted ads, advertisers wo n’t be able to access user information like age, location, or interests. Users will also be able to close ads, share feedback, and learn why an ad was displayed.
What ChatGPT Ads Mean for Businesses and Brands
ChatGPT presents a unique advertising environment. The traditional digital advertising model often targets people based on who they are, what they look at, or what they consume.Over 50 brands are expected to launch advertisements on ChatGPT in India during the launch week.
“With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions, OpenAI, said in a statement.
“Our goal is to make those interactions useful, help marketers design for intelligent experiences, and preserve what makes ChatGPT valuable: independent answers, conversations that stay private from advertisers, and meaningful user control,” he added. Source : Indian Express
ChatGPT brings another potential signal: what someone is actively trying to figure out. This could make the platform especially interesting for categories where consumers take time to research, compare, and evaluate before making a decision.
However, the model also presents a significant limitation for advertisers: the ad cannot influence the answer.
This means brands will need to compete not by altering what ChatGPT says, but by being relevant to the moment when a consumer is making a decision.
And that may be the biggest shift ChatGPT Ads bring to digital advertising: from targeting an audience to appearing within a conversation.
Key Opportunities for Advertisers on ChatGPT Ads
- Context-Based Targeting : Ads trigger based on the specific topic a user is actively researching, comparing, or seeking guidance on whether that’s tech specs, travel planning, or product recommendations putting brands in front of high-intent moments rather than passive scrollers.
- Reaching Budget-Conscious Audiences:Advertisers can potentially reach ChatGPT’s large free and Go-tier user base in India, including audiences that may not typically be reached through higher-priced subscription models. With more than 100 million weekly users reported in India, the scale of this audience makes ChatGPT an increasingly relevant platform for marketers.
- Low Barrier to Entry: OpenAI will open self-serve access to ChatGPT Ads Manager in India on September 4, allowing businesses of different sizes to sign up and run campaigns directly, with daily budgets starting at ₹725, making it accessible for small and medium businesses to test the format without a major agency contract.
- Brand Safety: Ads are context-driven rather than built on profile-data tracking, and OpenAI has confirmed ads will be excluded from accounts identified as belonging to minors and from sensitive areas including politics, health, and mental health.
What’s Next for ChatGPT Ads in India
With ChatGPT Ads, digital advertising could be moving from simply capturing attention to responding to intent.
With more than 50 participating brands, a self-serve Ads Manager expected to launch on September 4, 2026 and an advertising model built around contextual relevance and user privacy, OpenAI is establishing ChatGPT as a significant new player in India’s digital advertising landscape.
But ChatGPT Ads are unlikely to replace search or social advertising overnight.
Instead, they represent an emerging, high-intent channel that marketers can test alongside existing platforms. The bigger opportunity may lie in understanding how advertising changes when the consumer is no longer simply browsing content, but actively having a conversation about what they need.
For brands, the question may soon shift from “Who are we targeting?” to “What conversation are we relevant to?”
